Other Ways You Can Help...

Tailends is constantly struggling to meet the continually increasing costs of caring for elderly and ill dogs. The biggest commitment is for veterinary treatment and drugs. The policy at Tailends is to give our dogs the most appropriate treatment, thereby ensuring that they have the very best quality of life possible. Several of our dogs are on expensive heart drugs and most are on some form of pain relief for arthritis or painful old injuries. Tailends dogs need drugs for bladder and kidney problems or to increase the blood supply to the brain and nervous system. We also use health food supplements e.g. glucosamine and chondritin, fish oil, vitamin complexes etc. The dogs are all treated for worms and external parasites on arrival and periodically as necessary. Sometimes we take a dog who needs expensive surgery to improve or save his/her life. There are also the regular dentals, blood tests, scans, X-rays and dogs needing short-term hospitalisation. Nearly every dog needs an extensive dental on arrival after years of neglect with rotten teeth and often badly infected gums. Some dogs are unable to eat properly until this is done, as their mouths are so painful.

We purchase only the best quality foods such as James Wellbeloved products, Nature Diet, Forthglade and Nature:menu pouches. These foods are used in conjunction with tinned pilchards, tuna fish, scrambled eggs (we only buy free range eggs from a local source), weetabix, cottage cheese and a variety of fresh foods. Sometimes we take a dog with severe intestinal, kidney or liver disease and which needs prescription diet foods. Tailends has a vegan ethic wherever possible. It is quite possible and beneficial to give healthy dogs a totally vegetarian diet. We have found that it is necessary to use some meat products in order to encourage these old dogs to eat after years of neglect and poor diet. Some dogs have given up and have no interest in food. We often have to feed these by hand and tempt them with anything we can think of in order to start them eating again. They soon respond and start to enjoy their life for the first time.

Any help with general funding, or the donation of any of the following items would help to improve the care that we can give to the dogs:

Treats from the Veggiepets website. These are ideal for dogs with digestive problems.  Also biodegradable poo bags from this site would help us save the environment. Also James Wellbeloved Pure Incentives are ideal little treats for oldies who cannot manage larger snacks.

Warm fleecey covers for winter and cool covers for summer for the memory beds.  We have 9 of these size beds and the covers need to be approx 44" by 54".  The beds are 3ft by 4ft and 4 inches deep but need to be plenty big enough so I can change covers easily.  The opening is also important for the same reason.  It needs to be the full width of the cover and ideally a deep envelope type closure like a pillow case.   We need plenty of covers as they need changing frequently.

Donations – however small – are always very much appreciated.

Unwanted First Aid & Veterinary Supplies.

Dog Food. Fresh chicken. Speciality foods to tempt a confused or ill dog to eat. (e.g. Pilchards, Sardines, Tinned Milk Products, Tuna Fish, Nature Diet, Pouches, Diet Foods (Royal Canin Obesity Management, Burns Oat High-Fibre Diet, Royal Canin Renal Support diet, Sensitivity Control, Intestinal Support). We use dry and canned special diet foods as the wet food mixed in with the complete dry kibbles make it more palatable.

Lyofoam spongey dressings, Vetrap adhesive bandage.

Could You Offer a Home?

Greyhounds make wonderful companions and are often overlooked when people are choosing a dog. They do not need lots of strenuous exercise as many people think. In fact they are real couch potatoes and are happy with just two twenty-minute walks each day. The rest of the time they are happy to laze around while you do all the work. They can therefore usually be left for reasonable periods though we do not approve of leaving any dog more than about 4 hours at a time without someone visiting to give the dog a short walk.

Greyhounds are very adaptable and easily fit into a home environment despite often having spent years in kennels. It is our experience that these dogs are very clean and easily become used to a domestic routine. They are so grateful to have some home comforts at last and are very eager to do the right thing and please you.
They are gentle, good-natured and sedate, making them ideal companions for children and the elderly.

Please consider taking an older dog. They are always left in the kennels while their younger companions are chosen. They ask so little from you and you will be rewarded more than you could possibly imagine. An older dog would make the most grateful, trusting and loyal friend you could ever have.
